C.17 SEA: Responsive Stewardship
Service, Education and Adventure (SEA) is a non-profit marine based education organization based on Whidbey Island. In this presentation, SEA co-directors Chris Burt, Susie Richards and Scott Ashworth will describe how SEA supports stewardship and educational programs for youth and adults focused on our marine environment throughout the Puget Sound region. SEA collaborates with educational organizations and community partners to build supportive networks of educational learning experiences, community enhancement and student empowerment. Examples of current programs and projects, including their work with the NOAA B-WET Watershed Education Grant Program will be shared, as well as strategies for implementing service-learning and watershed education elements into existing curriculum and programs.  Chris Burt
Chris is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain, with a 100 Ton Power and Sail endorsement. For the past 25 years he has worked as crew aboard a variety of vessels ranging from an Alaskan crab boat to a 62' schooner to the 112' square-sailed Lady Washington. Chris also has extensive experience as a skipper, from serving as coxswain aboard 26' sail and oar-powered wooden longboats to captaining a 1000-horsepower steel tugboat. He is currently a captain aboard both the Sea Fleet LLC vessels Indigo and Luna. Chris is also a Washington State licensed teacher and has earned a Masters' in Education. He has taught at the middle and high-school level in public schools and for several universities. His expertise is in curriculum development and risk managment, and he regularly teaches professional development courses for practitioners. Chris serves as expedtion leader for SEA's marine-based programs.
 Susie Richards
Susie Richards, M.Ed, is a Washington State Certified Teacher who has worked in the education field for the past 17 years with a primary focus in service-learning, adventure and environmental education. She currently serves as the Co-Director of Service, Education and Adventure (SEA).
 Scott Ashworth
Scott has been a lifelong boater, from sea kayaks to larger vessels, including ownership of the 65-foot M/V Indigo. He has a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and through SEA provides opportunities to people of all ages to experience, and work to protect, Puget Sound.
