B.16 Un-Sound Waters: When the Earth Moves
Whidbey Island is bracketed by major crustal faults that pose a greater threat to Islanders than the future Great Cascadia Earthquake that will occur to the west. Learn about the Island's earthquake and tsunami hazards and how we can learn to live with these threats and keep our families safe. William Steele

Bill Steele has been the Seismology Lab Coordinator for the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network (PNSN) at the University of Washington, Department of Earth and Space Sciences, since 1993. He currently serves as Director of Information Services for the network, and as Public Information Officer (PIO) for both the PNSN and for many USGS earthquake related research activities in the Pacific Northwest. While directing the expansion of the PNSN outreach program, he has supported interdisciplinary and interagency cooperation between university, government, and private sector research communities to identify and address hazards issues. Bill represents the PNSN with membership in numerous government, community and professional organizations. Bill is a founding member of CREW (the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup) and is an active member of CPARM (Contingency Planners and Recovery Managers). Bill lectures about earthquake and geologic hazards and related policy issues for classes at UW and at other schools. He develops seminars, workshops, briefings and other programs tailored to the information needs of engineers, emergency managers and other “stakeholder” organizations and communities. Bill also works with K-12 teachers and students interested in hazards issues. His Seismology Lab provides lectures and tours for over 1700 K-12 students a year. Media providers are essential partners in the dissemination of information about recent earthquakes, to increase public science literacy and understanding of geologic hazards. Bill works with television, radio, and print media reporters providing interviews, background information and referrals to assist in the development of interesting and accurate stories. In addition to the regional media providers Bill has worked with National Geographic, The BBC, The Discovery Channel, Bill Nye the Science Guy, PBS, and a number of independent documentary film makers.
