In August and September of 2015, trained Beach Watcher volunteers worked on a pilot study with Washington Sea Grant and scientists from the University of Washington. Our volunteers were needed to set crab traps, lay transect lines, survey crab molts, retrieve trap contents, and measure and ID crab species. All organisms were safely returned to Puget Sound after data collection. These Beach Watcher teams of Whidbey Island provided valuable feedback to the “Crab Team”, testing and improving protocols for a future research study on invasive European Green Crabs.
The research study is scheduled for April 2016 through September 2016 on Whidbey and Camano and there will be a 3 hour workshop early in 2016 to train more Beach Watchers to participate. Please contact Kes Tautvydas (i) or Tom Vos (i) if you are interested.
